Kannur University Central Library started functioning at Kannur town in 1998. It was opened to the academic community in 1999. The Library has been serving the various sections of the University community viz., students, research scholars, faculty members, staff, graduates and students belonging to other Universities in the jurisdiction of Kannur University. Since then, it has enrolled more than 6214 members. It also provides temporary membership for utilizing the library services. The Library is also a recognized research Centre of the University in the subjects of History, Sanskrit, Statistics, Philosophy, English, Sociology, Economics, Malayalam, Urdu and Music. It is fully automated, using the library software SOUL, developed by the INFLIBNET, Ahmedabad. The Library provides the services of DELNET and UGC-INFONET e-journal consortium.
In addition to the Central Library, campus libraries are functioning in the different campuses at Kasaragod, Nileshwaram, Payyannur, Mangattuparamba, Thalassery and Mananthavady.
UNIVERSITY CENTRAL LIBRARY- A LIBRARY WITH A DIFFERENCE
Sri.M.A.Baby, the then Minister for Education and Culture, laid the foundation stone for the Kannur University Central Library & Research Centre on 20-02-2011. In this inaugural address, the Minister expressed the wish that Kannur University Central Library, on its completion, would turn out to be an ideal institution that founctions as a model to other University Libraries in the country. Once the Library starts functioning at the new building with better infrastructural facilities, it will function as a beacon by catering to the intellectual needs of the academic community as well as the general public.The University expects that if everything goes along the expected lines, the Minister's words will be materialized. Prof P.K. Michael Tharakan Vice Chancellor announced that the university intends to make it as a knowledge resource Centre of north Malabar.
The proposed 5 storied library building spreads over 1,20,000 sq.ft. It will have a seperate seminar hall with 350 seating capacity and a separate section for research area. Apart from these, neo literate section, section for visually challenged, audio visual section, archives section for Malabar collection, art gallery, heritage museum, digital library etc will also be provided in the library. The library will also house the Department of Library & Information Science.
The Govt. of Kerala has sanctioned Rs. 25 crore to the library, out of which Rs. 22 crore is meant for construction of library building, Rs 2 crore for arranging digital library and Rs. 1 crore for purchasing books.
